Recently I threw a ‘baby gathering’ for my pregnant sister and for those not au fait with the term it is basically a less glamourous version of the ‘baby shower’ popularised in TV shows like Friends… sorry Louise.
Planning the menu for the lady carrying a baby was easy and I opted for the well trusted pizza and salad option, but the real difficulty came with deciding what drinks to serve. My usual offering on such occasions is wine or beer and at the risk of sounding like someone a bit too fond of the devils brew, soft drinks and orange juice seemed rather Puritanical.
So I consulted the internet for inspiration and discovered that ‘mocktails’ are the trendy drink of choice for baby showers and decided to serve up two versions; ginger and lime and a lemon, rosewater and mint concoction.
The latter was the big hit of the night and had a fresh lemony taste perfect for summer; although I did wonder how much better it would taste with a jag of vodka.
My granny used to say ‘mocking is catching’ so the following weekend for Eurovision night I returned to the mocktail recipe, but this time created a more spirited version. With a few tweaks to the original recipe, more rosewater, basil instead of mint and a generous glug of vodka, my new version tasted like an upmarket Smirnoff Ice – not a bad result if you ask me.
Smirnoff ‘over’ ice cocktail
- Juice of 6 lemons (freshly squeezed)
- 50 grams caster sugar
- 2 tablespoons of rosewater
- 600-800ml of soda water
- 200ml vodka
- Ice cubes, to serve
- 8 basil or mint leaves
- To create the sugar syrup, put lemon juice, sugar and rosewater into a large jug and mix together. Allow the sugar to dissolve this should take around 10-15 minutes.
- Add the vodka, soda water and basil leaves and stir through.
- Chill in the fridge until ready to serve or pour into glasses filled with ice.
